Environmental impact
The Avenue site is the size of a small village, stretching over 250 acres. Having produced 18 million tonnes of coke, the works had left behind considerable environmental waste from the processing of by products. When emda bought the site it found that areas of soil, ground water and surface water were contaminated. The whole site was heavily polluted, full of buildings, pipes, waste tips, chemical tanks and lagoons.
Waste had been disposed of in a licensed tip and settlement lagoons, but leftover chemicals and chemical residues were still on the site in the rusting pipes, in the ground and within the structures of the derelict buildings.
